About Running for Jason

Running for Jason was created to honor the sacrifice of SSgt Jason Rogers, a native of Brandon, MS. SSgt Rogers is a Marine that was killed in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan April 7, 2011. Running for Jason’s organizers, Lindsey Lemmons and Lindsey Murphy, first ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 2011 in memory of SSgt. Jason A. Rogers. Lindsey Murphy knew Jason personally, and both Lindseys work with his mother Jenny Smith at the National Guard Headquarters. In 2011, we sold t-shirts and took donations, and in the end were able to donate almost $5,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project in memory of Jason.

While all of this started with us running the Marine Corp Marathon in October 2011, we felt compelled to do something that would keep the spirit alive, and saw Running for Jason as our way to do so. It was overwhelming to see the fortitude displayed by our Wounded Warriors at the marathon, so we decided to have an annual 5K in Brandon, MS. Lindsey and I witnessed firsthand the huge impact our little Mississippi community made by drawing together in support of Jason’s family during their loss. At the first 5K, we raised $8,500 for Tunnel to Towers’ Building for America’s Bravest, then at last year’s 5K we raised an additional $3,000 for Wreaths Across America, the Fisher House Foundation, and a local military family in need. We’re looking forward to another big year and hope to see you out there!

See you at the starting line!
